I Spent Three Months Drinking Protein Shakes and Learned Almost Nothing About Nutrition

Supplement marketing targets students, and it worked on me

I Spent Three Months Drinking Protein Shakes and Learned Almost Nothing About Nutrition

A guy in my residence hall was visibly leaner than when semester started. His secret, he said, was a particular protein shake brand. I bought a tub the following week. That was probably my first mistake.

The problem with starting with supplements

I was drinking two shakes a day but had not changed anything else. My meals were still irregular, still heavy on refined carbohydrates, still low on vegetables. The shakes added roughly 600 extra calories daily to a diet that was already not working for me.

Protein does support satiety and muscle maintenance during weight management. That part is well-supported by evidence. But a shake is not a replacement for understanding what you are actually eating across a whole day. I did not track anything. I just assumed the product would do something on its own.

What the experience clarified

After three months and no meaningful change, I sat down with a food diary app and logged a typical week honestly. The results were uncomfortable. I was eating erratically, skipping meals then overeating, and my protein intake from whole foods was already adequate.

The shake was not the issue. My understanding of energy balance was. Once I addressed that with actual meals rather than products, things shifted gradually over about four months.

Supplements are not regulated as medicines in Australia. Read labels and seek qualified advice before adding them to your routine.
